The collection now includes five formats. The 90x90 silk square remains the king size; it is joined by the 70 x 70 for the neck, the small 50 x 50 silk square for hair and bag, the large 110 x 110 silk square for the shoulders, and the twilly, a silk ribbon to tie anywhere. Each format has its own page, designs, and gestures.
A scarf is any light piece of fabric you tie; a square is a precise shape. Every women's silk scarf on this page is either a square or a twilly: 68 squares (18 small 50 x 50 squares, 14 squares of 70 x 70, 29 squares of 90 x 90, 7 large 110 x 110 squares) and 11 twillys. All are cut from the same silk twill described below. Our gradient silk and cotton scarves, a blended composition, are shown separately with scarves and stoles, precisely because they are not pure silk.
The word silk is protected. Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011 on textile fibre names reserves it for the fibre produced by silk-secreting insects and makes the fibre composition label mandatory. Satin is a weave, not a material: a satin scarf can be entirely polyester. Wording such as "silky feel", "silk effect" or "silk look" guarantees nothing. Before buying silk scarves, in store or online, the only proof is the written composition, ideally 100% silk.
Then comes weight. Silk is measured in momme, and one momme equals about 4.34 g/m². Many entry-level silk scarves are cut from a pongee of 8 to 12 momme, that is 35 to 52 g/m²: the piece is almost sheer, slips and will not hold a tight knot. Our twill weighs 19 to 22 momme, 80 to 95 g/m²: nearly twice as much material, and a knot that stays in place.
What is often called a small silk scarf is the small 50 x 50 silk square or the twilly: hair, wrist, bag handle. The scarf tied at the neck under a collar is the 70 x 70 silk square. The large silk scarf worn over the shoulders or as a triangle is the 90x90 silk square, and the large 110 x 110 silk square is worn as a stole. These designer silk scarves carry designs composed in house, never bought from a catalogue: that is what sets them apart from a generic silk scarf sold identically under several brands.

The diagonal is the useful measurement of a silk square: it is the length available for a triangle on the shoulders or a knot under the chin. Twenty-eight centimeters separate a 70 from a 90, and that is what decides whether the point falls on the chest or at the waist. Our guide silk square size details this choice.
What distinguishes a Misciano silk square from a standard scarf is technical rigor. Our natural silk twill, with a weight of 80 to 95 g/m² (19 to 22 momme), is woven in Italy. It is recognizable by its subtle diagonal, dense feel, and superior wrinkle resistance. This weave gives the piece a controlled matte sheen and a slightly crisp drape, a sign of a living fabric. All formats are cut from the same twill: a small square and a large square have the same hand.
The color fidelity of our silk squares is measured against the ISO 105-C06 standard, which assesses resistance to domestic washing: our dyes withstand more than thirty hand-washing cycles without significant loss of intensity, with retention above 92%. ISO 105-B02 guarantees 1,200 hours of equivalent UV exposure before perceptible color shift, compared to 400 to 600 hours for synthetic printed silks. The pigments are fixed by high-definition printing on Italian twill.
Misciano designs are not bought from a catalog. The historic 90 squares feature our double-sided prints, Promenade à Misciano, Plan de ville, Jardin suspendu, Boussole céleste. The 50, 70, 110, and twilly formats feature a new family of designs in the style of French engraving: medallions, coats of arms, celestial maps, porcelains, French gardens, bestiaries. The same universe is adapted from one format to another, the Zodiaque doré in 70 square and twilly, the Porcelaine bleue in 50, 110, and ribbon, never as a simple reduction: each design is recomposed for the surface where it will be seen, border first for a 50, central medallion for a 110, row of motifs for a twilly.
Around the neck, it structures a silhouette: a lavallière knot on an open shirt, a casual triangle on a simple top, or three wraps as a band for a dressier effect. On the shoulders, it adds a touch of color to a solid dress. In the hair, it ties as a headband, turban, or slipped into a ponytail. As a belt on high-waisted pants, as a bustier top in summer, or tied to a bag handle, few accessories offer the versatility of a square scarf. Hand wash in cold water with a mild detergent for delicate fabrics; no vigorous wringing or drying in direct sunlight. Iron at low temperature on the reverse side, or steam. By the label: the composition must state silk, ideally 100% silk, as required by Regulation (EU) No 1007/2011. Satin, silky feel or silk effect do not describe the fibre. Weight completes the proof: a twill of 19 to 22 momme, like ours, holds a knot where a light pongee slips.
