Our Methodology

How we calculate cost per wear and the durability factors for each material.

The Formula

Cost per wear (CPW) is calculated by dividing the purchase price by the estimated total wears over the garment's lifespan.

CPW = Purchase Price / (Lifespan x Wear Frequency)

Durability Factors

Our durability indices are based on:

Laboratory Tests

Abrasion, pilling, tearing and fading resistance tested by IFTH, Hohenstein and Centrocot.

Customer Returns

Analysis of 12,000+ customer reviews over 5 years to validate actual garment lifespan.

Industry Standards

ISO and ASTM standards for textile quality, combined with sustainable fashion standards.

Life Cycle Analysis

Complete assessment of environmental impact and longevity of each fiber.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about cost per wear and our methodology.

Cost per wear (CPW) is a metric that divides the purchase price of a garment by the number of times you wear it. For example, a sweater at 200EUR worn 100 times costs 2EUR per wear, while a sweater at 30EUR worn 5 times costs 6EUR per wear. It's a popular method in the \'capsule wardrobe\' and minimalist fashion community to justify quality investments.

Our estimates are based on three sources: (1) Independent laboratory tests (IFTH, Hohenstein, Centrocot) measuring abrasion resistance, pilling, and tear strength, (2) Analysis of 12,000+ customer reviews over 5 years to validate real-world lifespan, and (3) ISO and ASTM industry standards. See our Materials Index 2026 for complete details.

The term 'vegan leather' is often misleading. Most products sold under this name are actually polyurethane (PU) plastic with a thin layer of plant debris. Our Deceptive Materials Barometer reveals that 89 brands use this label deceptively. Average lifespan: 3-5 years vs 20-30 years for genuine leather.

It depends on quality. True Grade A cashmere (long fibers 14-15 microns) lasts 15-20 years and justifies its price. But our investigation shows 76 brands sell 'premium cashmere' blended 30-50% with standard wool or acrylic. Check certification and exact composition. 100% Grade A cashmere at 200EUR worn 500 times = 0.40EUR/wear. A blended 'cashmere' at 60EUR worn 30 times = 2EUR/wear.

Care is crucial. See our Care Guide for material-specific recommendations. Generally: cold washing, fewer washes, air drying, and proper storage can double your clothes' lifespan. For silk and cashmere, professional dry cleaning is recommended.

Our data comes from verifiable sources: certified laboratory tests (IFTH, Hohenstein, Centrocot), ISO/ASTM standards, and analysis of 12,000+ customer reviews. We document our methodology transparently. Estimates are indicative and actual lifespan depends on care and use. For journalists, we provide raw data on request: press@misciano.com.

There is no single answer, but here are benchmarks: under 1EUR/wear = excellent investment, 1-3EUR/wear = good, 3-5EUR/wear = average, over 5EUR/wear = question the purchase. The goal is not to minimize CPW at all costs, but to understand the real value of your purchases. A coat at 400EUR worn 200 times (2EUR/wear) is often a better investment than a jacket at 80EUR worn 10 times (8EUR/wear).

The durability factor (1.0x to 5.0x) compares a material longevity to the \'fast fashion\' baseline (low-grade polyester, viscose). A 5.0x factor means the material lasts 5 times longer on average. This factor integrates: abrasion resistance, shape retention, pilling resistance, and color stability. See our Materials Index 2026 for complete methodology.

The calculator provides estimates based on standard care. Good care can increase lifespan by 50% or more. Conversely, poor care (excessive hot washing, machine drying, improper storage) can halve lifespan. See our Care Guide to optimize your clothes' longevity.
