The authoritative textile materials guide

Discover the most comprehensive study on textile materials used in contemporary fashion. Our 2026 Index analyzes 20 materials across 10 performance, sustainability, and value criteria.

This reference study was conducted by Misciano materials experts in collaboration with independent textile laboratories. Each material underwent rigorous testing under real-world conditions to objectively evaluate its technical performance, everyday comfort, long-term durability, and actual environmental impact.

Our goal is to provide fashion professionals, informed consumers, and textile industry stakeholders with a reliable and transparent database for making informed choices. This index combines scientific data, field feedback, and comparative analyses to create a complete and objective overview of the 2026 textile materials landscape.

Our Scientific Methodology

Each material is evaluated according to a rigorous protocol developed by our textile experts in collaboration with accredited independent laboratories.

Our methodology is based on four complementary pillars that enable a complete and objective evaluation. Tests are conducted under real-world conditions over an 18-month period, with samples from multiple suppliers to ensure the representativeness of results. Each criterion undergoes quantitative and qualitative measurements, combined with field user feedback.

The collected data is analyzed by our scientific committee composed of textile specialists, materials chemists, and fashion professionals. This multidisciplinary approach guarantees the relevance and reliability of our evaluations for all textile industry stakeholders.

Comfort & Performance

Breathability tests according to ISO 11092 standards, softness evaluation by qualified sensory panel, drape and fall analysis on standardized mannequin, thermoregulation measurement under variable conditions from 5 to 35 degrees, wearing comfort tests over minimum 200 hours per material.

Durability & Longevity

Martindale abrasion tests according to ISO 12947 over minimum 50000 cycles, pilling evaluation according to ISO 12945, dye fastness tests to repeated washing according to ISO 105, dimensional retention analysis after 100 wash-dry cycles, UV resistance and daily wear evaluation over 12 months.

Environmental Impact

Complete cradle-to-grave carbon footprint calculation according to GHG protocol, water consumption quantification per kilogram of material produced, chemical usage analysis and toxicity according to REACH, recyclability and biodegradability potential evaluation, impact measurement on aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems.

Value Ratio

Cost per meter analysis as a function of measured quality, European market accessibility evaluation and supply availability, cost per wear adjusted for actual lifespan, comparison of perceived value versus market price, 3-year return on investment study for consumers.
