A shirt dress that buttons only to the waist
Most shirt dresses open from collar to hem, which causes them to gape when walking. This one stops at the waist: five buttons on a half-placket, a notched officer collar, then a single skirt panel closed all the way down. You slip it on over your head like a tunic, tighten the drawstring, and the dress stays in place without a single button to worry about. The cotton poplin, crisp and slightly crackly, does the rest.
The Wearing Experience
- A collar that holds without tightness: the officer collar is low, notched with a small slit in the middle: it frees the throat without ever rubbing the jaw
- A waist you can adjust: the drawstring runs all the way around and the fine cord ties at the front; the back section is gathered, so the fit stays supple when sitting
- Sleeves that let air through: wide, stopping above the elbow, held in place by a small buttoned cuff that doesn't slip when you raise your arm
- A closed skirt: no slit, no buttons below the waist: wear it without a slip and forget about it
Craftsmanship & Fabric
Composition: 100% cotton, woven in poplin. Poplin is a tightly-woven cloth with fine yarns where the weft is slightly thicker than the warp: this creates those faint ribs and the crisp hand-feel that doesn't stick to skin. A black cotton poplin is recognised by its matte surface; it has neither the lustre of satin nor the softness of viscose, and it creases frankly, which is the hallmark of a fibre that breathes.
The construction is that of a tunic, not a shirt. The half-placket allows the skirt to be cut in one piece at the front, without a wrap or buttonhole, and the drawstring channel replaces an applied waistband: the cord is stitched into a casing that's part of the dress itself, so it cannot get lost or slip. At the back, a shoulder yoke and a centre seam provide the width needed for the flowing sleeves without gaping under the shoulder blades. Styling Tips
- Drawstring tied, pointed-toe pumps and delicate earrings: the office version, with no other jewellery.
- Drawstring removed and white leather trainers, the dress worn straight like a tunic, as soon as it's warm.
- Under a beige trench coat left open in the shoulder season, officer collar buttoned to the top.

Care Instructions
Delicate wash at 30°C, by hand preferably, inside out. No bleach, no tumble drying. Dry on a hanger, drawstring untied and removed from the casing so it doesn't mark the waist. Poplin presses well: medium heat on the wrong side, fabric still slightly damp, running the iron tip under the collar rather than over it. Black cotton lightens with washing, which is normal; wash it cold and in the shade to delay this.
