The Little Black Dress, Summer Version
The classic little black dress is straight and understated; this one keeps the colour and takes everything else from the romantic wardrobe. The elasticated neckline bares the shoulders, the puff sleeves add volume to the upper arm, the gathered bodice is closed by a small knot and the skirt flares from a fitted waist. The black contains these volumes: what would look youthful in a light colour becomes sharp and graphic here, enough for dinner, simple enough for daytime.
The Wearing Experience
- A black that structures: the gathers and volumes read as shadows on the matte black, the silhouette stays crisp
- A defined waist: the sash tied at the back cinches the fitted waist piece and refines the line without compressing anything
- Shoulders of your choice: the elasticated neckline can be worn off-the-shoulder or pulled up into a wide round neck
- An easy length: the skirt stops at mid-thigh and keeps its fullness without clinging to the legs
Craftsmanship & Material
The fabric is made of 50% viscose and 50% polyester, according to the label sewn into the dress. For a black, this blend answers a common flaw of pure viscose blacks, which tend to turn greyish after several washes: the polyester content, dyed in the mass and more stable, helps the dress keep a deep black. The slightly embossed weave also avoids the shiny finish that smooth synthetic blacks sometimes have.
The sash is the detail that changes the cut. Its two ends are sewn into the side seams, at waist height; tied at the back, they pull the waist piece backwards and define the waistline, while the gathered skirt keeps all its volume. The top follows the principle of a milkmaid dress: gathered cups, a fine tie knotted at the centre, neckline and sleeves tightened by elastic, invisible zip at the centre back. Our elegant black dress guide places this cut among the other blacks in the wardrobe.
Styling Tips
- Black ballet flats and small gold hoop earrings: the daytime version, shoulders covered.
- Slim-heeled sandals and red lipstick: for a summer dinner, neckline lowered off the arms.
- Open oversized black blazer: the dress transitions into mid-season and keeps its romantic side.
It joins our black dresses and our short dresses. Same model in white and in lemon yellow.
Caring for Your Piece
Gentle wash at 30 °C inside out, with dark colours, ideally with a detergent for black textiles. No bleach, no tumble drying. Dry on a hanger and in the shade so the black does not fade. Iron on a low setting on the reverse side, never directly on the right side, which gives the fabric a sheen; re-puff the puff sleeves by hand.
