The little black dress, August edition
The little black dress has a blind spot: it was designed for the evening, in fabrics that do not forgive thirty degrees. This one takes the vocabulary, round neckline, clean line, no ornament, and transposes it into a lightweight, matte fabric, with straps that tie on the shoulder and a high gathered waist. Black remains black; it is the construction that changes with the season.
The Wearing Experience
- Deep matte black: no shine, so no stray reflections in full sun, where satin bounces light and hardens the silhouette.
- Tie straps: they adjust the height of the empire waist to the centimeter, without imposed notches.
- Elasticated gathered waist: it marks the silhouette at the narrowest point of the bust and lets the skirt flow freely.
- Short, full skirt: enough volume to move, short enough to remain a summer dress rather than a cocktail dress.
Know-How & Fabric
Woven 95% polyester, 5% elastane, fine weave and matte finish, dyed in a full black that leans neither blue nor gray.
On a black piece, color retention matters more than on any other: that is where fading shows first. Synthetic fibers are dyed in the mass, before weaving, whereas a natural fiber is dyed on the surface afterward. That is the technical reason why a polyester black resists sun and repeated washing better than a cotton black, which grays season after season. On a dress meant to spend summer outdoors, the argument is not theoretical.
The 5% elastane is not there to make the dress stretchy: in a woven, this proportion gives low elongation but almost total elastic recovery. That is what holds the gathered waistband over time, where a bare elastic would relax with washing and eventually gape. Our feature on short dresses details the effect of these construction choices on the line.
Styling Tips
- By day, flat sandals in natural leather and a light basket bag: the contrast warms up the black and keeps the outfit from tipping into evening wear.
- For a terrace dinner, square-toe pumps and a pair of fine hoop earrings suffice; the matte black holds the dressed-up register without adding anything.
- The contrast that works: a single shiny material in the outfit, a patent sandal or a gold jewel, never both, so the matte fabric remains the backdrop.
This piece joins our black dresses, our short dresses, and our selection of summer dresses. It is also available in brown.
Caring for Your Piece
Machine wash at 30 °C on delicate cycle, dress turned inside out and straps placed in a mesh bag. Wash black with black: synthetic fibers pick up light lint, which remains very visible on a matte fabric. No fabric softener, as it leaves a film and dulls the depth of the color. Dry on a hanger in the shade, never in direct sun. Iron at low temperature if needed, avoiding the gathered waistband.
