Manifesto 2026

The Right to Textile Repairability

We call for a mandatory Repairability Index on clothing. Because repairing should be a right, not an exception.

Our Manifesto

In 2020, France introduced the Repairability Index for household appliances. In 2026, we call for its extension to textiles. Here are our 5 demands.

The Context: An Ecological Emergency

Every year in France, 700,000 tons of clothing are put on the market. Among them, 66% end up in landfill or incinerated. Yet, according to ADEME, one in two discarded garments could be repaired.

Fast fashion has normalized disposable clothing. A 15€ shirt, a 5€ t-shirt, a 20€ dress. Unbeatable prices that hide a reality: these pieces are not designed to last, let alone be repaired.

In 2020, the Anti-Waste Law for a Circular Economy (AGEC) established a mandatory Repairability Index for electrical and electronic products. What if we did the same for textiles?

Our 5 Demands

1

1. A Mandatory Repairability Index

We call for a repairability score out of 10 to be displayed for every garment sold in France, as already exists for washing machines, smartphones and laptops.

Consumers have the right to know if their purchase is repairable before buying. This index would allow objective comparison between brands and guide purchases towards durable pieces.

💡

Example: A jacket with wide seams, spare buttons and accessible lining would score 8/10. A fast fashion jacket with tight seams and non-replaceable zipper: 2/10.

2

2. Availability of Spare Parts

Obligation for brands to provide essential spare parts (buttons, zippers, fabric patches) for at least 10 years after purchase.

How many perfectly wearable garments end up in the trash for a missing button or broken zipper? The availability of parts transforms a dead garment into a living one.

💡

At Misciano, we systematically provide 2 spare buttons and a 10x10cm fabric sample for each piece. It's possible, we already do it.

3

3. Open Technical Documentation

Publication of free and accessible repair guides for each model sold, with sewing diagrams, care instructions and parts replacement procedures.

Repair know-how should not be kept secret. Every garment should come with its repair instruction manual.

💡

We publish video tutorials for each type of repair on our pieces: button replacement, zipper repair, invisible mending.

4

4. Training for Textile Repairers

Creation of certified training for textile repairers, with a recognized national standard and a Certified Repairer quality label.

According to a study by the French Fashion Institute, 15,000 jobs could be created in textile repair in France. We need to train these professionals of tomorrow.

💡

We support the development of professional training and offer internships in our workshops for future repairers.

5

5. Tax Incentives for Repair

Reduced VAT at 5.5% on textile repair services and on garments displaying a repairability index above 7/10.

Repairing must be cheaper than throwing away. Today, a repair often costs more than a new fast fashion garment. This is a systemic problem that only fiscal intervention can correct.

💡

The repairability bonus could be inspired by the automotive ecological bonus: VAT reduction for repairable pieces, tax on non-repairable pieces.

The Parallel with Household Appliances

The Repairability Index has proven its effectiveness. Since its introduction in 2021:

78%
of French people consult the index before buying
+23%
increase in household appliance repairs
4.2/10
average product score (target: 6/10)

Textiles represent 4% of global CO2 emissions. Applying the same model could prevent millions of tons of waste each year.

Frequently Asked Questions about Textile Repairability

Everything you need to know about the right to repair and the textile repairability index.

The textile repairability index is a score out of 10 that evaluates how easily a garment can be repaired. It takes into account the availability of spare parts, accessibility of repairs, technical documentation, and garment design. The higher the score, the more the garment is designed to be easily repaired.

The repairability index was established in France in 2021 for electrical and electronic products (AGEC law). Textiles were not included in the initial scope, despite their major environmental impact (4% of global CO2 emissions). Our manifesto calls for its extension to the textile sector.

Currently, no official indicator exists. Here are some criteria to check: seam width (minimum 1.5cm), presence of spare buttons, type of fastener (prefer standard zips), lining accessibility, and documentation availability. At Misciano, we already display this information on each product.

The most common repairs include: button replacement, zipper repair, mending holes, letting out (widening), hem adjustment, lining replacement, and size alteration. A well-designed garment allows all these interventions.

Prices vary by complexity: 10-20€ for a button, 15-30€ for a zipper, 20-50€ for a size alteration, 30-80€ for invisible mending. That's why we call for reduced VAT on repairs to make them more accessible.

Our manifesto calls for a minimum of 10 years of spare parts availability after purchase. At Misciano, we commit to providing buttons, fabric patches, and fasteners throughout the garment's lifetime.

Preventive maintenance (washing, ironing, storage) extends the garment's lifespan. Repair comes into play when a part fails (lost button, hole, broken zipper). Both are complementary: good maintenance reduces repair needs.

Yes! Many simple repairs are accessible: button replacement, small hem, basic mending. We publish video tutorials to guide our customers. For complex repairs, we recommend using a professional.

Professional tailors and seamstresses are present in most cities. We are working on creating a network of certified Misciano repairers. In the meantime, you can check local directories or ask for recommendations in stores.

According to ADEME, repairing a garment rather than buying a new one reduces environmental impact by 65% (CO2, water, waste). A garment repaired 3 times over its lifetime sees its environmental cost divided by 4.

Absolutely. Repairability doesn't prevent style or innovation. It simply requires thoughtful design: wide seams, standard parts, documentation. The greatest couture houses have always designed repairable pieces.

You can sign our petition, share this manifesto on social media, contact your elected officials to ask them to support extending the repairability index to textiles, and prioritize brands that design repairable garments.
