Factors That Reduce Lifespan

Each factor below can significantly reduce your garments longevity.

Our Methodology

How we estimated the real lifespan of each garment type, fabric by fabric, combining scientific data, ISO standards and field observations.

Calculation Formulas

Durability Index

Durability Index = Martindale score x Fiber quality coefficient

Estimated Lifespan

Lifespan = (ISO abrasion cycles / Annual wear frequency) x Care factor

HQ/FF Ratio

HQ/FF Ratio = Premium lifespan / Fast fashion lifespan

Data Sources

Our estimates are based on:

ADEME

French ecological transition agency. Clothing lifecycle data: actual wear duration, abandonment rates by category and environmental impacts (2023 report).

WRAP UK

Waste & Resources Action Programme. Studies on the UK textile market: perceived vs actual durability, buying and care behaviours by fibre type.

Ellen MacArthur Foundation

Circular fashion economy data: average garment utilisation rates, premium vs fast fashion comparisons, lifespan potential by fabric type.

ISO Standards

ISO 12947 (Martindale abrasion resistance), ISO 12945 (pilling), ISO 105 (colour fastness). Reference standards for objective textile durability assessment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about garment lifespan by fabric type.

What is the average garment lifespan in France?
In France, a garment is kept for an average of 3.3 years before disposal (ADEME 2023). This varies considerably: a coat lasts much longer than a basic t-shirt. This average is well below the technical potential of many quality natural fabrics.
How long does a cashmere sweater last?
A high-quality 100% cashmere sweater, with tight knit and appropriate care (hand wash, airing, moth protection), can last between 10 and 20 years or more. Budget cashmere will start pilling intensely after just 2 to 5 years.
Which garments last the longest?
Longevity champions are thick wool coats (15-30+ years), silk scarves (15-30+ years), structured virgin wool jackets (12-25+ years) and premium cashmere sweaters (10-20+ years). Their intrinsic resistance, combined with less frequent maintenance, allows them to exceed 15 years of service.
How can I extend the lifespan of my clothes?
Three rules: wash less, wash better, store smartly. Air garments after wearing instead of washing them every time. Use delicate programmes at 30°C and avoid the tumble dryer. Store precious fabrics clean, in cotton garment bags with natural moth repellents. For more tips, see our Care Comparator by fabric type.
Why do fast fashion clothes last less long?
Fast fashion sacrifices durability to cut costs: shorter and less resistant fibres, less dense weaves, less stable dyes, construction with reduced seam allowances. These garments are designed to survive about twenty wears, not years.
How many washes can a silk dress withstand?
A quality silk dress, washed exclusively by hand with a mild detergent, can withstand between 40 and 60 washes without major deterioration. Machine washing, even on a silk programme, drastically reduces this life expectancy.
What is the impact of tumble drying on garment lifespan?
Tumble drying combines aggressive heat and intense mechanical stress, causing shrinkage, deformation and premature wear. It can reduce overall lifespan by 30% to 50%. Natural fabrics (cotton, linen, wool) and viscose are the most vulnerable.
How can I tell if a garment has reached end of life?
Signs of technical end-of-life: irreparable holes at elbows or inner thighs, generalised colour fading, irreversible loss of shape, fabric weakening that tears easily. When repairs are no longer sufficient, the cycle is over. To optimise care and delay this moment, explore our Ultimate Care Guide.
